How fast does US recoqnize earning elite?

Thanks to the double miles offer, I will be earning enough miles on US to earn at least 1st level elite status and possibly 2nd level this month (from no travel on US in 6-7 years).

Will US credit me with the elite bonus once it seems I've clocked over 25k and 50k?

How long will the status last for? Until end of next year?

As soon as the miles hit your account... they will update your elite status. The reservation system will show your elite status and you will have the "status" even if you have not received your membership kit in the mail. Status earned this year will actually be good through the end of Feb. 2002.

geo1004. Just recieved my Silver Preferred card which says that it is good only through February 28, 2001. Will they issue another one which indicates the 2002 date?

NOVACAT: Here is how it works. If you received Silver status this year as a result of one the "challenges" (fly 7,500 miles in a certain period for Silver, etc.) then your status will be good for the year 2000 and will expire at the end of Feb. 2001. However, if during the year 2000, you end up flying 25,000 status miles, your Silver status will then be good through Feb. 28, 2002 because you will have qualified for 2001 Silver status. Of course, if you received Silver status this year because you have already flown 25,000 status miles in 2000, your Silver status will be good from now until the end of Feb., 2002. Clear as mud right...

Thanks geo1004. I think I understand now. I did qualify using a challenge even though I was not Preferred last year so hence the 2001 date. However I will go over 25K miles shortly so I guess they will reissue a card showing the 2002 date when it clears.

Actually, no. You will not receive a new card until Feb. of 2001 when they do the big mailing of packets to everyone who qualified for status for 2001. Perhaps by then they will need to send you a Gold packet.

I received 2 Silver Preferred packages. Now that it has been mentioned, I see one card expires 2001 and the other 2002! I guess the 2002 (if it came to me later) was when I passed through the 25k Q-miles threshhold before doubling. I guess they will send me a Gold package for the double miles thing, and hopefully a second Gold package once I pass through 50k real miles.

That is very interesting... perhaps a 2nd Gold packet will be on its way to me after I cross the 50K stautus mile mark in a few weeks.

I found the letter that came with my 2nd Silver Preferred package. It only made me Silver until 2001 while the first was 2002. Given that I am Gold, what should I make of when my status is good until?

FWIW, I made Silver 18 April, Gold 8 May, and this Silver package was dated 16 June.

Got my Gold package today. Membership is only good until 2001. Are the elite status levels gained through the double Q-miles promo only valid for the short term?

If so, it looks that unless I get my upcoming trans-continentals or trans-Atlantics booked in F and J/C respectively, I will have to take a transcontinental flight for 50k real Q-miles (and of course get a 4th pair of SWUs)

Just to update this thread regarding double tier miles used to acquire levels of preferred status; the rep at the Silver Preferred Desk told me today that there is absolutely no difference in flown miles and double tier miles for the purpose of acquiring levels of Preferred Status. In other words if one accumulates 50k preferred miles some from "regular" miles and some from the double tier miles promo they will recieve Gold status through February 2002.

Double mile offer took place from March to May of this year. It was a simple and effective way to get folks to fly US after the near FA strike. The key for us was that the double miles (on flight miles - minimum of 500) all counted for status this year. Meaning, you're old 4,500 miles for CLT-LAX (approx) became 9,000 miles all counting for status.

Interesting how UA didn't go quite this far with True Flyer. Not that I blame them.

NOVACAT: There is one difference for the double miles. They do not count for issuance of upgrades. In other words, let's say you flew 10k flight miles as a GP during the bonus period. You'd get 20k miles (plus your regular 100% mileage bonus) of which the 20k would count for status. And you'd think that the 20k would mean 16 upgrades being issued, right? Wrong. US issues the upgrades on the basis of the 10k actual flight miles. So, while you get 20k to status, for upgrades, you're considered only to have flown 10k. That's the only difference I can see.
