how do SWUs work with multiple stops / stopovers?
Hi all,
I've been thinking about taking a trip from home(BWI) to HNL(5)-SIN(1)-HKG(1)-NRT-KIX(2)- back home, involving single/multiple day stops in these cities (parentheses are the days stopping over). How does a SWU work in that case? What counts as the one way? Seems like it would be incredibly worth it if I could use 1 for all the way from BWI to KIX!
THanks for your expertise!

As long as stops are less than 24 hours en route from your origin to destination, then you could use one SWU.
In your case, looks like the longest segment eligible for 1 SWU would either be HNL-SIN or KIX-BWI.

But since he's stopping for 5 days in HNL and a day in SIN (which will be > 24 hours), he won't be able to use 1 SWU for BWI to KIX.

Does that mean that if my trip were booked so I stayed no longer than 24 hours in any one place, I could use 1 SWU to go the entire trip?

Each SWU is good for one direction. So if none of your stops are > 24 hours, you'll need 2 (one for westbound and another for eastbound) for your trip.

If none of your stops are > 24 hours, I am guessing one SWU should last you BWI-NRT (UA doesn't fly NRT-KIX) then another for KIX-BWI.
Since you've already gone thru NRT once on your way to SIN, I am not sure whether UA will let you use the same SWU for the HKG-NRT segment. I know that BWI-HNL-SIN-HKG on 1 SWU would be fine because I've done something similar before.

TA. These SWU can be used for over 15,000 miles each if planned carefully:
