Can I earn miles on a Spanair flight (class M)?
Can I accrue these miles to my Mileage Plus account?

Yes. All revenue Economy class tickets earn 100% miles and 125% in J class. Miles do not count towards status.

I talked to an AC reservations agent about status miles.
If you book it as a Spanair flight, the miles are not considered to be status miles.
If you book it as an AC codeshare on that same flight, the miles are considered to be status miles.
I wonder if UA has the same system - noncodeshared flights earn nonstatus miles, and codeshared flights earn status miles?

I doubt that will happen in reality. All codeshare flights post to Aeroplan as whoever was operating that flight. (i.e. If you were on AC 1234 opeated by BD, then the flight will post as BD XXX not AC 1234.)

When do Spanair offically join Star Alliance? That should then be status miles on UA

No specific date. They are saying within the next 6-12 months.
