Decoding "fare calculation" to "booking class"
Hi all,
My travel agent recently booked for me an international round-trip on Luthansa. For the first time, I'd like to try to use the SWU/paper certificate to upgrade from Lufthansa business to Lufthansa first class. However I want to make sure that my booking class is one of the allowable classes.
The only thing that I have from my travel agent that seems like it might have the booking class indicated is a long string of digits that is called the fare calculation on the PDF that he sent me. Is the booking class somewhere in there?
Thanks!

Booking class is usually the first letter of the fare basis.

Are there any restrictions on fare basis when trying to upgrade a paid Biz ticket using the paper SWU's?

LH Z fares are upgradeable using SWU's...so contact UA and get the paper versions so you can try. It's nice that LH allows you to upgrade from Z... UA does not on its own metal.
From what I understand from reading here LH does not cater for a full first class cabin on every flight if it is lightly booked. So when using a SWU it's best to contact LH the day/night before and let them know you plan to upgrade to F at the airport. They can be sure the flight has enough catering... otherwise, they can shut off the cabin to further upgrades.

1a. Lufthansa Standby: This upgrade may be used on a standby basis, subject to availability, on the day of travel on any eligible Lufthansa flight in accordance with the terms and conditions of this certificate, except when booked in LH booking classes X, I, R, N, W, S and E. In addition L and T fares are also excluded for Intra-Europe flights. Please note: This upgrade requires a 14-day advanced notification to Mileage Plus in order to print and mail the certificate for presentation to Lufthansa on the day of departure. Please contact the MPI Service Center to have certificates printed.
