NF on KVS - same flight, different NF availability
I just booked TUS-DEN-DCA flights on .bomb, and tried to use KVS to maximize upgrade opportunity - both flights showed NF availability. But after upgrade for DEN-DCA (UA484) wasn't confirmed I checked KVS again - seems that UA484 shows NF0 if the KVS request is only for DEN-DCA, but the same flight shows NF5 as part of a TUS-DEN-DCA itinerary. This seems strange - any explanations?

I believe UA allocates award and upgrade seats with "married segment" availability, just as it does for revenue seats. So at times a given bucket will be available for x-y-z, but not x-y and/or y-z. For revenue tickets, it's a technique to maximize income; but it's unclear to me why they do it with award or upgrade seats.

It's definitely worth a phone call to UA to see if they can clear the leg manually that didn't clear. KVS (and united.com) sometimes show erroneous award/upgrade availability.
