splitting mileage from a single ticket to two programs
Can a single LAX-ORD-BOS roundtrip be divided for mileage so that one of the fours segments contribute miles to UA mileage plus account and the other three segments go to my SAS account? I need to do it to cross thresholds for awards on both of these airlines. If the answer is yes, do I have to tell United something special at the time of putting in my numbers?

It can be done. The easiest way is to have a CSR at ORD change the number and re-issue your boarding pass. This should eliminate confusion at the time of booking and checkin, just make sure that the new boarding pass displays the right FFP number.

You could also not attach any FF program when you originally book your flight, but send in the boarding passes for the appropriate mileage accrual later.

I do this all the time, especially on international itineraries where on a single ticket I might credit various sectors to UA, TG and SQ. I always try to ensure that the BP shows the correct program name/FF#. On rare occasion, I might have to send in ticket stubs, but the mileage has always credited. Note, however, that you run the risk of double credits, where two programs occasionally are credited for the same sector. This has happened to me numerous times, and of course I always immediately call up and beg the FF program people to remove my unearned credits...

I do this more often than not (trying to optimize promotions, higher minimum miles, upgrade possibilities, status miles needed, etc) between my two StarAlliance-frequent-flier-programs UA Mileage Plus and LH miles&more.
Often I will only do it after check-in (at a Lounge or even later at the gate) to not loose upgrade (waitlist) chances.

I've also done it quite a bit. It seems to work fine.
I second Rudi's point, though - for instance, if you're waitlisted for an upgrade on United and you're both a 1K and a LH Senator, if you use your MP number you go to the head of the line (along with the other 1Ks) while if you use the LH M&M number, you're behind the Premiers.
