Are E-Certs legitimate?
I've only had one experience using an E-certificate on UAL.com, so my experience may not be typical.
Prior to entering any certificate number, I was presented with the typical flight options and ticket prices; I was even given lower prices that United "found"...they were about $3-$6 lower depending on connections.
Then I went back and entered the certificate number, and was presented with considerably higher fares, despite the fact that the cert stated it was valid on all published fares, whether purchased through a travel agent, United, United.com or my corporate travel department....
Inasmuch as I've only attempted this once, it is entirely possible that all of the low fares were sold out in the ten minutes I was experimenting with UAL.com, but I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this phenomenon.
If electronic cerificates are nothing more than an elaborate ruse to make United's most loyal passenger believe they're getting some sort of discount, then I'd like to know. If it's a legitimate discount, then I certainly want to recognize and appreicate it!
Thanks,
Craigg

I have never had a chance to try a online cert. I have also not found any UA personel who has even admitted to who can issue one. Could you tell us what you and from who you received it from. I would not doubt the chance of finding the cheapest fare since the current paper tickets can not be used online where the fares are usually much better than I can get through the phone and then use my cert at the airport.

I just used an e-cert tonight for a trip; there was indeed a considerable difference in the price with and w/o e-cert discount.

There is a disclaimer that comes with the e-certs that say that the flights selected that qualify (not all flights qualify!) for the e-cert discount may or may not be the lowest fares for the route and time selected. This is due to on-going availability of lower class fares and also online promotions. So the rule is, check and double check.

The e-cert I received was from Hyatt Gold Passport. It was for 15% off, whether the ticket is purchased over the Internet, CTO, airport or travel agent.
Of course, IF entering the certificate number automatically offers fares that are 15% above the lowest fare otherwise available, then United's business practices should be scrutinized.
