you are confusing boarding and checkin. 1p members may not use the red carpet boarding, they call prem ex boarding before group 1. at checkin there is signage of who can use elite checkin,

This may be OP's question
Premier Executive priority services
First in line: Priority check-in
Check-in for your United flights at the counters designated specifically for you. If no elite line exists, you are welcome to check in with our United First customers at most major terminals in the U.S. and Canada. On international flights, you may check-in with our United Business customers.
So if there is no elite check-in you can use the FC check-in

as gomike said in boarding 1Ps always use the regular boarding line but will board before Seating Area 1

yeah, i don't think this 1P boarding thing is working too well. I don't want to be a gate lice, so i sit at my seat, and when 1P is being called, i get up and try to make my way through all through all the people, but since there's only are usually few 1Ps Zone 1 often starts before i can get through the swarm of people around the economy entrance since i don't want to be the jacka$$ that yells out "I'm a Pre Exec, let me through" My solusion, either go back to the old system, or let 1p use the red carpet after GS and 1K has boarded.

+1! While they generally do call P1 right after the red carpet folks board, it seems to be only a few seconds before Zone 1 also receives their invitation. The only thing that seem to work in these situations is spotting (well in advance) a large aggressive P1 in whose wake you can sail along.

So you've seen me at the airport, huh?

That is me. I wait until they start boarding the red carpet and head for the Y line. I'm big enough that nobody messes with me and I'm always close to the front when the agent has to wave back the first few GMs who aren't 1P.
