Using SWU on flight segments of different Class

I am looking at a flight SFO-IAD in M and IAD-AMS in D. Can I apply a SWU to this entire trip and move into business for SFO-IAD and first for IAD-AMS? I have never tried to upgrade a trip that has different classes of service for segments.

Is it on the same PNR? If yes, I don't see why this would be an issue.

I don't have any anecdotal experience with such a situation, but I am inclined to believe that United's IT could not handle using a single SWU on such a combination.

I didn't even think they could handle one PNR with two different classes of service!

Here is our experience. On a recent ORD-IAD-LHR trip, Mr. R used a SWU and was placed in F for the ORD-IAD leg and in C for the IAD-LHR leg.

Of course, there was no C class in the ORD-IAD leg.

Is that what you are asking about?

I believe the OP is asking if one leg1 is in Y and leg2 is in C, can an SWU be used to upgrade leg1 to C and leg2 to F

or something like that.

Yup, this is the situation. I am going to have my agent go ahead and ticket, then I will report back. Since it is refundable (M and D fares), if there is a big problem I can find another routing.

How much more is it to book it all in D? If you did that you'd remove the fare split (SFO-IAD + IAD-AMS), so it may only be marginally more. But you'd have to check.

That's not at all what the OP is asking.
