Upgrade Strategy: One PNR or Two
A companion and I are planning on traveling to Tokyo on April 4 via UA 891 and we would both like to upgrade to C with miles. I am 1P and she is 2P. What would be the best strategy to get us in C - one PNR or two? It would seem to me that it would be tougher to clear beforehand with both of us on one PNR. On the other, if this went to DM, a 2P on their own might have real trouble getting the upgrade. Heck, as a 1P, do I even have to sweat it if it goes to DM?
What I do know is that two people are apparently already waitlisted for the upgrade. Although I know viewing the seat map is horrendously unreliable, there are only nine assigned seats in C on .bomb and the flight is showing Z9.
We will also want to upgrade on the way back, but I am really only concerned about the way out. But I guess I should mention the return is showing NC1. We'll split up if we have to.

Keep in mind you will need a Y,B,M, or H fare to upgrade with miles. The new upgrade changes are effective July 1.

I would split the PNR into two in order to claim the upgrades if UA releases the seats one by one in advance. However, if it gets down to the gate, then each of you are on your own with your status.
891 on Saturday is heavy with business travellers in C. Perhaps the loads have been lighter lately due to the economy...
