500 free Mileage Plus miles
Hi all
Given the forthcoming merger with US Airways I thought to point out the following.
Firstly you can get 500 free US Airways miles for electing to receive your Dividend Miles statements by email.
http://www.usairways.com/
Secondly United have stated
at
http://www.usairways.com/corporate/press/nw_00_0524.htm
"Frequent-flyer programs will be consolidated, offering passengers more destinations than any other airline program "
thus when US Airways is consolidated with United, the US Airways miles will be added to your United account.
So if you are not already a US Airways member it makes sense to sign up and get the free 500 miles. When the programs are merged you'll have an extra free 500 Mileage Plus miles.
Happy accruing
cheers Peter

It worked for Reno for 1500 miles which was added to my AA account. But I'm not sure whether UA/US merger will go through...

Likewise I also got 1500 free miles from my Reno Air account added to my Aadvantage account.
This is the advantage of belonging to as many frequent flyer programs as possible and collecting as many freebies as possible. you never know when one of the airlines is going to take over another and with non-expiring miles in many of the programs its often just a matter of waiting.
My tip America West will eventually be taken over by one of the bigger US airlines. Which one? Delta or Continental probably.
cheers Peter

Looks like this may be a possible 500 miles for some.

With all the UA bonuses going on, I'm going to be a bit snobbish...I'm not going to fill out some form for a measly 500 miles.

I don't think we should be holding our breathe about this merger - even after it happens it could be months before it happens.
I've got 150,000 in USAirways and would love to have them in Mileage Plus.

Their press releases about the merger have sort of run out of puff recently if you read the website above and click onto the "United" link!

My hunch is that UA is taking a low profile on the merger externally until the UA pilots contract is formally ratified; it's not a done deal until this occurs. (Recall that the AA pilots rejected their one year extension and forgiveness of the $40+ million fine after the terms of the UA pilot deal became known.)
It would not surprise me if UA also continues to low key the merger until the mechanics contact is resolved, maybe even the FA negotiations.
However, I am equally confident that behind the scenes, all the wheels are turning to make this deal happen.
US also appears to be taking the low profile approach at this stage. They are having their shareholders vote on the merger next week (12th, I believe).
Whether this proposed merger is good for the public in general long term, good for Mileage Plus or Dividend Miles members... my crystal ball is no better than anyone else's. However, corporate consolidatation is clearly a fact of life in virtually every industry, even some that are highly regulated. In this context, I think UA decided to act now and make a premptive strike and have its choice of merger partner (the one they believe makes the most business sense for them), rather than be the last major airline to the party and only be able to merge/buy whatever carriers are left.
I also noted the report this week in planebusiness.com quoting an "Inside Wall Street" column from Business Week that a buyout bid for Delta may be forthcoming from an unknown party. I haven't had a chance to explore that report any further or see if there are comments on the DL board, but the bottom line is things are as fluid in the airline biz as many others.
Edited for typos.
