How big a factor is date of requesting upgrade?

One response to an earlier upgrade question indicated that WHEN you requested to be on the upgrade list was a factor in where you place on the list..On earlier trips in 2000, I did not ask till maybe a week before flight date and only suceeded in 1 out of about 8 flights requested as a PremEx. I requested a month out my last trip and was 3 for 3, including 2 flights with only 8 F seats (a 737 and 319); one of the small F cabin flights was ORD-SAN, which I didn't expect to get confirmed on, but did, before I checked in for my IND-ORD flight to connect with it. Makes me think that time of request plays a fairly big part in who gets the upgrade. Yes?

You should request an upgrade as soon as you make your reservation for all flights that there's the ghost of a chance you'll want to sit up front on.
