just don't do it regularly and you'll be fine.

Throwaway ticketing (not using the final segment(s) of a ticket) is usually not an issue unless you do it repeatedly as a way of avoiding paying higher fares. Since you are doing award travel, it's even less of an issue. But don't bring it up with UA personnel, or they will be obligated to charge you the sometimes higher fares plus change fees.

What abmj says is probably something to consider. Since you say that you are moving, it is likely that you are going to have some luggage with you.

Unless your connection time in SFO is very long, I think you will find agents very reluctant to check you bags only part way. It's a security thing I guess. Theoretically, someone flying their complete itinerary but checking bags halfway could check in something bad that would do damage in the connecting station.

From my reading of the OP, this isn't throwaway ticketing (at least, of the type that UA cares about). They want to drop a segment on an award ticket. UA's not going to care one bit. When you book, get a stopover in SFO or LAX and UA will thank you for leaving one more seat open in E+.

You have to call.

Contrary to Mahasamatman's advice, I believe this is just a multi-city itinerary and therefore is bookable on line, no?

Waiting to be corrected.

The only award tickets (the topic of this discussion) you can book online are simple round-trips. No open jaw, no multi-city.

Mahasamatman,

Why don't you just book an open-jaw east coast-Hawaii-SFO to begin with?

Reading this whole thread, I'm wondering exactly the same thing? Unless the OP wants to book a s/o in SFO and save the last bit for use at a later date.

Another variation. Since it sounds like you don't need a stopover on the outbound, book the return with a stopover (on the phone) and date the last segment for a far future date. You can then change the date and flight on that last segment as many times as you like up until a year from original ticket issue. So if you need a flight back to JFK sometime after you move, you have a free coupon for award space. If you don't end up needing it within the year period, you can just ignore it.

Of course, finding ANY seats available for award travel to Hawaii might be a bit of a problem .........

Just booked an Open Jaw

Hi,

Thanks for your advice, you certainly know your stuff.

I ended up booking an open jaw (which I did not know you
could do). Has to be done with person and they charge $15
per person.

Booked ALB->LIH->SFO

Not taking last segment of award ticket. Cancel?

I'm flying the return of an award ticket from HKG-SFO-ORD and I'm not intending to take the SFO-ORD segment. Should I just "not show up" or should I officially cancel this last segment.

I don't make a habit of "throw away ticketing" but I need to in this case.

lifeonitsown Jul 27, 2007 12:21 am

This doesnt belong here but HKG-SFO-ORD-SFO-HKG is your complete itinerary then if you dont take SFO-ORD, and not inform them, they might cancel your return itinerary. On the other hand if SFO-ORD is your return itinerary then you can get away with it.

Would you have checked baggage? That might create a problem.

mrichmond Jul 27, 2007 1:56 pm

Is there a chance you'll fly that exact flight again? If so, you should consider calling and rescheduling for some time far in the future. I believe you have a year after the outgoing flight (I think) to take the return. Worth a shot...
