Small satisfaction...
This is probably a little silly, but I felt irrationally proud of myself, so:
Yesterday I was driving myself crazy trying to find a cheap flight *within* Europe for this summer. As you know, this is a fruitless endeavor, with hordes of backpackers consuming all the cheap seats, all the way through the beginning of August. The frustration is compounded by the fact that all the little (cheap) airlines have difficulty being ticketed here in the US.
After 3 hours of annoyance, on hold, compromising on where I land (ie. alternate cities) etc, I suddenly remember LH, and being able to use UA miles to book reward seats. In 15 minutes, I've got open jaw travel from London to Catania, Italy (unbelievably close to where I want to go, tickets there are unbelievably expensive) and back from Venice to London. Plus, cost only 20,000.
Silly, I know, but here at least, I'm glad I thought of it -- and I'm satisfied and impressed with how the alliance and the parter bookings worked.
Any similar stories?

I often use UA miles for flights within Europe on LH. Especially if they are open-jaw. This summer will be going from Berlin-Rome, then Rome-Munich, only 20,000 miles, much better then the $1400+ they wanted per person. Only problem is there are no flights Berlin-Rome, nonstop, so I have to connect in Frankfurt.
My Mom will also being doing this, but Berlin-Munich-Stockholm and then Stockholm-Munich.
These are always a good "buy" for the miles, considering how much $$ it would cost you. And there always seem to be seats available on the flights/dates I want.
By the way, it is not worth the extra miles for Business Class, because within Germany the seats are identical, only different meal, and within Europe they are not much wider. LH actually have seats they can switch from Business to Eco, by rotating a lever. This turns the configuration on a 737 from 3-3 to 2-3, not much difference. Plus as star alliance gold I still use Biz check-in counters and lounge.
Also remember that LH boards by Zone number, like shuttle by United. However (and I can say this since I was a born German), this is the one time that Germans don't follow instructions and aren't orderly. EVERYBODY boards with the first zone announcement, so don't get left behind!!
