one additional advantage of LH's miles&more (just found out about that when booking at the local LH office in Zurich my RTW aug/sep today):
UPGRADES, on international segments too, using MILES, with ANY PAID FARE (UA "only" with SELECT fares). ... and you don't need any special status to upgrade - just enough miles in your account.
ONE DISADVANTAGE: LH's awards are ONLY good for yourself, or a partner travelling the same itinerary as you! with UA you can give away for free your award to whom you want - why not to me?

Rudi: Can you confirm at time of reservation these upgrades and are they good from any fare domestically too? I am just now changing my chart again.

YES and YES (but domestically is a waste of miles for what you win).
