Why the delay for miles to post?

I'm just wondering why it takes so long before various miles post to your MP account.
For instance I submitted a retro-credit request for an Air New Zealand flight. I first had to wait 14 days to submit the request and then it takes 4-6 weeks for the miles to post. That's up to 2 MONTHS before the miles show up. In this computer age I wonder why United takes so long. Is it that they don't want the miles being used for a return trip or is it really because of system constraints?

Why do you believe it is UAL that is the source of the delay?
A search for NZ will show that Air New Zealand flights are slower to post than many other *A flights.

In this case, it's NZ that's taking so long to respond.

The answer is because the process is still probably somewhat manual - and requires transfer of data between the two airlines, and time to match up to see whether or not your request can be granted.
