Have you considered a star1 round the world fare? You may be able to get C for close to Y.

How about the TG/VS rtw? SFO-VS-LHR-TG-BKK-HYD-x-CCU-BKK-LAX for $3600 in C.

It's a combo RTW C fare offered by Thai Airways (TG) and Virgin Atlantic. You'd fly Virgin nonstop to London, and then Thai the rest of the way. And it's $3600 in C, probably comparable to many Y fares on this type of itinerary.
