Saver Upgrade Award on Lufthansa 30K miles Rules ?

Hi,

I recently got a saver upgrade award from an UA account for use on Lufthansa from a close friend who issued the certificate but could not use it due to a lack of availability.

It is a paper certificate with certificate value of 30,000.
  1. Is this is standby upgrade like the paper SWU for LH use, which are presented upon check-in?
  2. Or can it be confirmed at the time of booking? If yes, how? Who would I have to call? UA or LH?
  3. Which booking classes does it apply to?

Thanks for you advice!

1. Theoretically, no, but I've gotten away with it before.
2. Yes, by calling UA, telling them you have a UA-issued paper upgrade for LH, giving them your LH ticket number, having them queue off a request to LH, and calling back in a few days to hear the response.

  1. No, it can be confirmed in advance (not sure whether it can also be used on a standby basis).
  2. You would need to call UA. Of course, confirmation is subject to availability.

Thanks a lot for your answers. Being able to confirm an upgrade in advance, makes it much nicer. However, I am disappointed that it is not valid on D or Z fares like the SWU.

Best wishes!

Although I did this several years ago, I have been successful using these certificates to get upgraded at the gate. It works if there is space in the cabin you want to upgrade into.
