Confused upgrading using miles.

I am trying to upgrade a paid domestic trip using miles. I usually check the availability of first class awards and confused with the codes. NF, XF,NC, NY and XY. I thought upgrades needed X or I availability.

Thanks in advance for any clarification.

With the two-letter codes, upgrade inventory is shown as NC (upgrade to Business) and NF (upgrade to First). They are equivalent to I and X respectively.

Right, and XY is coach award, NY is special 1K inventory coach awards, XC is award business, and XF is award first.
