I just booked a flight for next January and it pulled it out of the NY inventory, so i think 1K's get the NY seats and the non-1K people don't lose out.

I'd have to concur that this is probably the main advantage of 1K. Seems like the agents on the phone are a little more willing to check alternatives for you, which makes the possibility of getting an award higher.

Also, yes there is a special 1K bucket, but as pointed out in an earliar post, it is only for Y seats. I wonder how useful that really is anyway. I mean, how many 1ks do you know who would actually be willing to fly economy?
