downgrading class of service
I accidentally upgraded one of my flights tomorrow, but I don't have enough certificates. Is it possible to downgrade it back to economy with united's website (calling CS now, but man, I think it's going to be a long wait)

In a word, nope. The site is not that sophisticated. Once your upgrade clears, you have no option but to support it with certificates from your account, or buy more certificates. Calling CS is your best option.
Now that you've upgraded, you are no longer in whatever Coach fare bucket you originally booked. In order to downgrade, there would have to be space available in your original bucket, and a seat must be open in Coach.
Let us know how things turn out!

yes you can.
go to my itineraries > select view/modify > request upgrade > you then have the option to cancel upgrade.

CS agent transferred me tech support. They re-booked me in economy class, but obviously lost my original seat assignment. And to boot, it won't save any seat at all now.

If you've been upgraded using 500s, you could always purchase a block of 4 for $200 to support your upgrade.

Well, its been interesting. After having tech support put me back on economy class (still not sure what they did) I was told I could pick a seat online. After signing in, and picking a seat for the 1 leg that was changed, I get the seat assignment successful, but no seat assignment showing.
Called direct to tech support this time, and they can't do it either. Now I'm worried about the boarding pass I printed out earlier and asked if that still works, and he says I have to check in at the airport now. ugh.
Just realizing, anyone know how long the regular United line is on a Saturday morning at BWI (10:15am departure)?
