Interesting offer. Account needs to be open and funded six months. $50 fee is waived for accounts with $25k or greater funding. I suppose if one has the cash lying around, just have Fidelity invest it in something safe.

T&C's:
Offer Rules:
Offer valid only for individual or joint Fidelity Accounts, personal trust accounts and business accounts opened online or by calling 1-800-544-3719 by 12/31/05. Offer is not valid for retirement accounts including IRA, Roth IRA, SEP and SIMPLE, 401(k), 403(b), etc.), some fiduciary accounts (including custodial accounts, estate accounts, etc.), college investment trust accounts, 529 accounts, annuities, accounts managed by Strategic Advisers, Inc., and clients of Registered Investment Advisors working with Fidelity Investments. Non-U.S. residents and those working for entities identified in NYSE Rule 350 are ineligible. Employees of Fidelity, its affiliates, and members of their immediate families and households are not eligible for this offer.

This offer is available for new households only. Limit one per household. Offer expires 12/31/05, is not transferable, is not valid in conjunction with any other promotional offer, and is subject to change without notice. Transferred assets will be valued at time of receipt by Fidelity. Please allow eight weeks from account opening and funding with qualifying dollar amount for Mileage plus miles to appear in your United account. Fidelity account must remain open with minimum funding for six months.

Additional deposits to the eligible account will earn the customer a higher mileage award provided such deposits put the cumulative deposits above the next eligibility tier (up to a maximum of 25,000 miles). Initial and subsequent deposits must be made within 90 days of account opening. Miles accrued, awards issued and bonus offers are subject to the rules of the United Mileage Plus program. United, its subsidiaries, affiliates and agents are not responsible for any products and services of other participating companies and partners. The Mileage Plus program, including accruals, awards and bonus mile offers, is subject to change without notice. Taxes and fees related to award travel are the responsibility of the passenger. United and Mileage Plus are registered service marks.

Hasn't this offer been around a long time now? I even used to see this on some UA ticket jackets for a while. Anyway, I used it last year (10,000$ for 15,000 miles) thinking I'll cancel in 6 months, but I still have the account, and its up some 10% , so not a bad deal overall.
While on the topic, has anyone succeeded in doing this for more than one person per household (which is the restriction they list)? I am thinking I will open an account in Mrs Eulalie's name.

Did this last year. Two unrelated persons living at the same address. No problem.

Previous offer also allowed $25,000 to be added to existing accounts. This one evidently doesn't.

Because I didn't open an account fast enough (less that 7 weeks allowed), I was told that the offer lapsed for me. So I just signed up again and will respond to that package once it arrives. Be aware that they only give you so long to respond and they don't mention that in the promo materials.

I would suggest calling Fidelity and negociating. They wont fight too hard if you deposit $25,000. At least they did not for me. I had been a customer for over two years and still got the miles. Of course, this is assuming that you are applying for the promotion for the first time.
