zrs70, please take the downstairs, leave the upper deck to me. :-)

15A was pretty nice. There was enough storage, (need to work on slimming up my backpack to fit in the side compartment), and it was like having an aisle seat since I could get up and wonder about without any gymnastics at all. The overheards are practically worthless. Maybe a purse would fit up there, but what were they thinking?

I think the service level has been higher in the past. Not to put down the FA we had on our flight, but most of the flight it was one FA, and for meal service two. She remarked that they used to have three up there.

15A vs. 15H

I am only comparing 15A with 15H.

I'd prefer 15H over 15A as well if I could think of a way to effectively use the extra 3 feet.

All things being equal, I go for 15a, no question. But if the upper deck is 100% full, and the lower deck is 25% full, I may be persuaded to sit on the lower deck. Why?

1) More personal space
2) Fewer pax to compete with
3) More lavs to mysefl
4) Empty seat(s) next to me
5) More storage space
6) Quicker exit to customs

One more possible last minute additions to the manifest to fill up the C cabin: UA employees.

I find that it's not generally enjoyable to sit next to an employee in F or C. Somehow one of the working crew decides to chat it up in the aisle for awhile.

Overall I would agree with your thinking. If there wasn't the likelihood of the lower deck filling up and staying with only eight or ten other passengers, I would move to 25A or H from any where in the upper deck (and I'm a 17A fixture). Much better to have the space and the attention than a cubby compartment at your side.

OK, I'll confess. I always take 22 or 25 on long transpacs. Can't sleep on those flights (doze a bit, but just not tired enough since the flights go in the early afternoon), so the location near the galley doesn't bother me. I like to get up and walk around a lot, and it is easier to wander around downstairs. Upstairs just feels like I'm flying overseas in a 757. I like the open feeling of the big jet.

Plus of course you get to be first off for immigration/customs. After a long flight every minute counts.

Although I like the upper deck as much as anyone....if I was not connecting in NRT I would be downstairs to get to immigration quicker. If I am connecting and have a couple of hours, up top is fine of course but sometimes if you are up top there is somebody that has trouble figuring out how the stairs work  and it delays you getting out. The seat is the same and if I could (could is a stretch here as I doubt it will stay that way but who knows) have a seat next to me empty downstairs I would take it.

However, I like 16. Clearly there is more space in front of you in 15, but 16 suits me just fine. I am generally travelling with my wife and the three side bins are very handy and we are not bothered by the diminished (relatively speaking) leg room.

I may be perverse, but I actually prefer row 8 to row 9 on the 752 P.S.

speaking of 15, I also know frequent travellers who actually like the right side of the aircraft better. Not sure why. As far as I can tell the only difference between the left side and the right is the FA jump seat facing 15 on the right which would seem to be a disadvantage, or at least not a plus.

I'll tell you why they like the right side of the aircraft better, the LED for your Bose QCII headphones is on the right side. If you are on the right, the FAs are less likely to see the LED and pester you to turn them off during takeoff and landing!

For me, the right/left choice is generally based on:
1. where I'm flying (SFO->SEA is prettier on the right, for example)
2. where the sun is (daytime transpacs from the US, the right side is better because the sun is generally on the left, etc)

Of course, I'm a window-seat kinda guy, so it's probably less of an issue in the aisle...
