As a newbie (only started flying extensively since summer of last year) I can certainly attest that. The rules of the qualifying period is very confusing and unclear. Till now I still cannot find any literature at ual.com that clearly indicates that all EQM accrued in 2004 will qualify you for elite member in 2005 through 2/06, because the language can be easily interpreted as all miles will qualify you for 2004 qualifies you for membership of '04 and good until end of 02/05. It is only from following FT I figured out how it is supposed to work.

Though perhaps a valid question, that was not the point of my post. I was simply agreeing that the T&C's are ambiguous.

What? As sjsharksfan states, EQM miles earned in 2004 qualify you for status through 2/06.

Wow, when did this change take place? I though miles earned in year N gave you status for year N+1 plus Jan/Feb of year N+2, e.g. miles earned in 2004 gave you status for all of 2005 plus Jan/Feb of 2006.

This is getting confusing.

Miles Earned in Year 2003 = Status for 2004 + 2 months (Jan, Feb)

Miles Earned in Year 2004 = Status for 2005 + 2 months (Jan, Feb)

Miles Earned in Year 2005 = Status for 2006 + 2 months (Jan, Feb)

It is clear now...

It seems to me that the confusion came in because he didn't realize that any double EQM's he earned between 10/25/04 and 12/15/04 would be lost on 12/31/04. I think he fully understood that he would only earn double EQM's from 10/25 through 12/15.

The language that confused him from the promotion language was that it discussed earning double EQMs toward 2005 status. Without a full understanding of the way MileagePlus works, it is understandable how a newbie wouldn't understand that 2005 status is earned from 01/01/04 though 12/31/04. He obviously thought that he was getting a head start on his EQM earnings during 2005.

Personally, the T&C's were quite clear to me and anyone with a rudimentary understanding of the program wouldn't be confused. However, I can understand why a newbie might not completely grasp the concept.

Yes,

That is basically my contention. I'm the OPL (whatever that is) and a newibe. What is more to the point or to my confusion is that I can earn 2005 status in 2005 and that is what I thought I was getting a head start on.

But I NOW understand that in 2005 I'm earning status for 2006 primarily and 2005 secondarily.

And Yes I should have and wish I did pick up phone.

Just a thought. Why wouldn't/couldn't MP make this promotion available to only those members who receive a benift from it ?

I thanks all those who offered suggestions. I plan writing a letter and I guess I just send to the general CS and hope for the best.

If you had flown 12,500 miles in that 2004 time period of the promo you would then have had status. How is MP supposed to know if you will receieve a benefit from it?

oops sorry - but his post confused me too

So yes

I flew 100+ miles in 2004

IF I started the yr with no status then as soon as I crossed 25K I would be Premier from that date in 2004 thru 2.06, 50K PremEX from that date thru 2.06 and finally when i hit 100K I would be 1K from that date thru 2.06. Your status starts the day ( well within a couple) pf when you earn it.

so this program could have been of assistance to the OP

The OP (which is "Original Poster", as opposed to "OPL" which is "Original Poster with a typo) should simply print out this thread and send it to United with a note:

"See, it is confusing!"
