Miles Not Counting when Using Code Share

Can anyone explain to me why when I fly a USair flight--even though it is labeled as a United flight, I can earn miles/segments towards my status, but not have the miles count towards earning additional upgrades?

I am confused by the logic of this.

Those are the rules. I suppose one could presume that this is related to incentivizing passengers to fly on UA metal Vs. the alternative.

I assume this is the case. Perhaps this is also related to the ways in which it is difficult/impossible to upgrade when flying the "other" carrier -- i.e as a US elite flying US, I automatically upgrade into F, but you can't do it on US and when I fly UA I can't upgrade without paying $.

Incentivization is also key. I wonder if we'll ever see a time when you get different EQMs when flying partner airlines, like 95% or 90% on US as another form. I hope not (but see the way NW flyers get 50% EQM on discount-YCO fares whereby CO flyers, who book at the website, get 100%).

I thank everyone for their comments. The whole idea of incentivizing doesn't make sense when UAL sells flights via their website on USair. What is the point of having a partnership with USAir and using them to supply product to customers like me but treat it as second rate? That doesn't make sense to me. I think it is bad business practice.

UA doesn't make nearly as much money when you fly a UA flight number on US metal. Since they don't get all the money, they can't provide all the perks.

Providing an incentive to fly UA metal makes perfect sense while offering codeshares. It allows UA to get a piece of a market they normally may not have access to.

But the problem is: most corporate travel agents force the traveler to take the low fare, and this tends to be the codeshare. UA isn't doing themselves a favor when the US fare (for example) is always lower than the UA fare, on UA metal.

What was UA thinking when they allowed this to happen?

I don't see how this is consistently the case....

They don't have the costs, either... they still have the seat to sell to someone else on their own metal as well.
