Simple Question...

I'm sure that this is an obvious question to many of you, but I couldn't seem to find an answer on the United website....

If you have booked an economy award ticket on UAL and a seat becomes available in biz (before commencing travel), is it possible to cash in the extra miles and change your booking to a biz award without penalty?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can do this.

In fact, if you know you want an upgraded seat... you should go ahead and request it as soon as possible. If one is not immediately available, you will be waitlisted.

Good luck!!!

As far as a penalty is concerned, be prepared to pay a $75 mileage redeposit fee, since you'll be exchanging your Coach award for a Business award.

I've never understood the rationale for this. Put the miles back in, then take them right back out. $75?

Doesn't this only apply after ticketing? In which case it is a re-ticketing fee (even if an e-ticket ).

Of course if you cancel altogether, after ticketing, then it is a re-deposit fee.

The rationale can be related to cost of the transactions. The other factors you don't see.

Thanks for all of your responses. I was hoping that merely upgrading from a coach award to a business award could be done without penalty, but I suppose a $75 award ticket is still cheaper than a paid ticket

HChrist, great question. As others have said, yes, you can do it. It will cost $75 if you've already ticketed. Also, just some thoughts on posting - more helpful to the FT board if you use a more descriptive title that provides a better indication of the subject matter.
