If no luck at PHL, repeat asking any and all agents when you arrive at SFO. Maybe mention too that it's a win-win for the airline since
they already collected for 3 flights but only have to pay for flying you 2 legs.
I doubt if that will work very well since the segments of the PNR will then be out of sync with the e-ticket. The e-ticket would need to be reissued to show a single coupon LAX-PHL and delete the SFO-LAX coupon. Otherwise, if you fail to use the SFO-LAX coupon on the day of travel, the rest of the e-ticket coupons will have their status changed from OPEN to SUSP. SUSP means suspended.

Yikes! I hope you come back to FT.

I totally agree with those who say that the pricing of fares is absolutely inscrutable. For example, I'm going to Bangkok in November and the flight stops off in Narita. The ticket from HNL-BKK is $615. But if I only want a rt tkt from HNL-NRT, the cost is around $800. In other words, UA is taking me farther for less than simply taking me to Japan.

Who can blame anyone for thinking this is strange? And why wouldn't someone simply ask if it's possible to forego the NRT-BKK-NRT portion? Now, UA may have its reasons for its willingness to take you farther for less $$ but, at first blush, it does seem inexplicable.

So, perhaps a little understanding and a more gentle tone is called for.

Wait a minute, rufus102 (and others), this is not about understanding pricing. This is about asking (rather directly) how to do something that he knows is against the rules. The guy was not saying: I got myself in a mess and is there any way I can legitimately get out of it? He is asking about "purposely" going against the rules.

Maybe some of us overreacted, but I think that this first post was not well thought out.

One of the conditions of a cheaper ticket is that you have to pay to make any changes.

You and United made a contract. They offered the plane ride under certain conditions, and you accepted those conditions, and you paid a lower price than full fare. Now you want United to ignore your acceptance of the conditions, and you want to trick United into giving you benefits, for free, that you only would have gotten by paying a higher fare.

You can't have it both ways. Doesn't your word or promise mean anything? You told United that you accepted their conditions, and now you want to weasel out of them. I bet if United decided to change THEIR conditions, that you would complain long and loud.

How about you just take some personal responsibility for your own decisions, and do what you agreed to in the first place? If you want to make changes, you pay the fee you agreed to.
Is this a joke or do you work for United? Otherwise I can not see a reason to go after a person like this. "doesn't your word or your promise mean anything" give me a break mother theresa!

[QUOTE=euslaner]He is asking about "purposely" going against the rules.
QUOTE]

I must respectfully disagree. He stated, specifically, "now I want to purposely miss my connection..." You happen to know that missing a connection on purpose is against the rules. But the original poster may not have. And now that he does know that it violates the terms of the original ticket, maybe it's a bit clearer why the original itinerary must be repriced.

Not everyone understands the difference between a changeable ticket and a restricted one, for that matter. For some time, I always thought that all tickets were unrestricted, and only by reading FT did I understand the difference. Now, when I book restricted tickets, I know the chance I'm taking. But we shouldn't assume that everyone does...

I think its pretty clear that he called UA and was told its against the rules

While I agree that the OP asked an inappropriate question here, and more-so, asked it in the wrong way, I also agree that some people have been a little hard on him... and seeing as I forgot to mention it in my first post in this thread, welcome to FT!

@:-) WOW!!! @:-)

I can't believe how many attorney's, priests, poets, and rabi's there are on FT.

This response and debate is exactly the reason many first time posters don't hit the submit button.

All the guy asked, basically, is what happens if he misses one of his segments. I'm not even sure he worded it wrong, but "So what", even if he did? There was absolutely no call to embarrass, berate, and demean him (or her) by a bunch of "holyer than thou" attitudes and responses.

It was this person's first and probably last thread and post, and who could blame him or her???

Most of the thread's and posts I've seen on here are how to "screw the system" and in my opinion a lot of you live in "glass houses".

Frankly, I'm really not impressed with posts such as---

How do we get VDB's?
How can I get into the RCC for free (anyone in ODR tomorrow)?
Hey, I lucked out---They forgot to take my SWU's!
How can I get my friend into E+?
MMer's ain't No Good!
Is it 1k or 100K?
No pre departure drinks today!
Weather delay, I demand compensation!
Mechanical delay & I missed my appointment, what can I do?
United sucks!!!
The "Friendly skies are falling"-No loan---Heard it first from me!!!

But, "Scrolling" is a great option. "Give it a try", and quit picking on the NEWBEE'S!!!

I SEE THE "LOCK"A COMIN'", "IT'S COMIN AROUND THE BEND", "I AIN'T SEEN NO SUNSHINE, SINCE I DON'T KNOW WHEN"!!!
