Today on flt 436, channel 9 was not available. I went to the washroom prior to take-off and upon exiting noticed the cockpit door open with pilot/first officer just talking. I politely said hello and they responded very nicely. I asked "By any chance do you turn channel 9 on?" Immediately the pilot's facial expression changed and looking right at me said "no, absolutely not, it will not be on" and turned forward...weird. I replied OK and returned to my seat.

I just wish I had THE appropriate, proper reply...
