Flight Numbering

What are the general rules that apply to how UAL numbers its flights? Obviously UX and codeshare flights are 4 digits while UA flights are three, and westbound flights end in odd digits while eastbound flights are even, but what about flights that end in "01", are in a particular series, etc.?

There are 4 digit UA flights. 9XXs transatlantic flights (or their predecessors/continuation). 8XX TransPacific.

UA XX (2 digits) transcontinental, with their corresponding other legs. (UA22 for instance does SEA-SFO-JFK).

There have been quite a few posts on this subject, both here and in the archives. I think you pretty much understand all the "rules"; the odd/even thing. There are specials, like 1776, 1492, 1777 etc. that apply to a specific city/airport.

Here are the "rules" as I understand them:

UA 1-1699 - mainline UA
* UA 1-99 Transcon/Premium Transcon
* UA 800-899 Transpacific and Latin America except MEX
* UA 900-999 Transatlantic
* UA 1000-1099 Mexico City and Canada
* UA 1400-1599 Ted
* UA 1600-1699 Caribbean and Int'l Leisure (CUN/GCM/AUA/BDA) including STT/SJU

UA 1700-4999 (approx). Various codeshares including US Airways, Mexicana, Asiana
UA 5200-5999 UAX op. by Air Wisconsin
UA 6000-6999 UAX op. by Skywest
UA 7000-7999 UAX op. by Atlantic Coast and Mesa
UA 8000-8099 UAX op. by Trans States.

Beyond - some other codeshares including Lufthansa, Air China, Air Canada...

And the rules above for westbound/eastbound...

Also mainland US - Hawaii flights fall in this range. There are occasional exceptions, like UA185 SFO-LIH.

Don't forget 1776 to PHL and 777 to LAS.
Also, when an aircraft is involved in a tragedy, the flight number is removed from inventory.

I remember all the flights from Denver to Las Vegas all had at least one 7 in them. This has changed with Ted, they are all 14XX numbers.

I noticed all but one flight from Chicago to Las Vegas had a 7 in it.

When times were better they must have had more fun with the flight numbers than today... or maybe they had more time on their hands, but I did enjoy the subtle humor on some of them.
