Considering the loads at the begining of the month to/from MIA, I'd be surprised.

Besides, I don't want to see the only domestic RCC to server free drinks (ok beer and wind only now) to shut down http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Isn't a big, new terminal just for Star Alliance members being built in Miami?

Spanair briefly flew IAD-MAD a year or two ago but couldn't make it work. Currently they don't fly any trans-Atlantic. They're the new Mexicana: the airline at the back of Hemispheres with the least little black dots showing regions served.

FLL and MIA are 20 miles apart. IMO the biggest difference is walking distances between check-in, gates and security. These distances are far less at FLL.

UA is a very weak carrier at both MIA and FLL, handling only one or two flights at a time.

UA seems to gain better ticket prices from FLL compared with MIA. Lots of business people at FLL and lots of tourists at MIA. But the low cost carriers are more evident at FLL. Frontier flying to DEN and ATA flying to CHI, AA flying to ORD etc. Thus, UA has no route monopoly.

US has a good number of operations at FLL and moving all the services together could provide easier US/UA transfers. My colleagues complain that UA can't fly them easily where they want to go, so a consolidation of services could be a good thing.

FLL was the fastest growing US airport last year, pax traffic was up 16%. However, MIA also grew 13%.

If this is true, its not on the computer yet. I just tried to book a pretend flight from IAD-MAD in late OCT and it says I have to stop in PHL.

Well this is actually a rumor, so no formal press-release has been issued by UA admitting or denying it. Without this, they would not load the timetables with the route. What you're seeing is the US codeshare.

OK I have it from a reliable source that FCO and MAD are *** NOT *** in the game plan. Sorry folks, better put your pizza and sangria runs on hold for now.... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I just looked at the Easyschedule and couldn't find anything listed for these flights on UA metal only.

You would have to use US Air or Lufthansa.

I have to second that, my source says Rome and Madrid will not happen until UA has a two class product to deploy in those cities. Future 3-cabin operations will probably only make sense for places like Tokyo, Hong Kong, London and Frankfurt. (Please don't take my suite away ORDLHR!!!)

However, I did hear that there might be an additional European destination on the horizon this summer. I'd be happy about the particular city, but that's because I vacation near there. Have to say I was a bit surprised though, not what I expected.

Athens would be nice.

Unexpected! I heard EDI. Nice for touring and Golfing Vacations. Subject to Government backing and support etc.

Would be nice for United to start serving the leisure Euro market... i.e. Rome, Madrid, Athens, etc. I agree with the requirement for a two-class aircraft. However, I think Athens is quite a challenge, as they have horrendous security issues.

Liz Jan 19, 2004 11:06 pm

I just read something today on our internal website. Athens is a no. There will be charters I'm sure, but no scheduled service except through Star Alliance.
