Phantom segments are they common?

Was just checking my current itinerary to see what seat I was assigned on my domestic upgrade on Tuesday when I noticed the outbound flights still showed (as expected). But what I also saw was a parallel booking to my traveled YYZ-ORD-SFO that had me on flights between YYZ-LAX and then LAX-SFO. I surmised this might have been for protection if my original flights were delayed, though the LAX-SFO flight arrived 5-minutes after my SFO-SYD flight was to depart (though we were actually delayed almost 2-hours). Anyone else experience such a booking phantom?

Only in situations where there has been a rebooking due to some sort of problem. It's most definitely worth a call to get it cleared up.

And people doubt the existence of parallel universes?
