Excuse me Ma'am . . . would you mind warming my nuts?

OK, OK ... could not resist the thread heading.

Have noticed on last dozen or so It'l flights in C that the small bowl of nuts is not warmed.

Now mixed nuts are nice IMO, especially seeing they actually seem to comprise mainly almonds on UA. (And full marks for that.) And hey let's face it - is one of the few little 'nice' touches remaining in It'l C, but they were usually warmed first before being served IIRC and no longer are.

And nuts also IMO taste so much better when they ARE warmed. We had 777 "First" flights SFO-HNL-LAX this week, and the fact is the nuts on those flights WERE warmed, and did seem to be more enjoyable tasting thus.

So I asked the FA this morning LAX-SYD if there was perhaps a way she might warm my nuts. (She was about 70, so please no-one misinterpret this. )

The answer was the usual public service long haul FA response lately - : "we no longer do that up here".

Seems like a small thing to acheive and if the old 777s can do it, I suspect a 747 galley can if they CHOOSE to.

Some things FA's simply CANNOT do like Godivas, or toiletries in loos, or button holed napkins, or ice cream, noise reducing headphones, or enough Champagne, etc - as WHQ makes those dopey calls without their input.

At start of long flights BOTH sets of FA's are buzzing about the galleys before the reserve shift take their union break, so it is not for want of staffers I guess?

So what is the warm nuts score sheet on other UA It'l routes lately?

Of course you might look at it froma different perspective in this day and age.

Be thankful that the airlines even allow you to have your nuts on board! &lt;g&gt;

I'm surprised that in the refusal, there was no mention of "responding to the requests of many of UA's best customers...."

Oz, I am surprised you want to engage in such pornographic activities in an airplane cabin. Perhaps it would be better to take your nut warming exercises into the loo?????????????

Over at CO, we have developed the Warm Nuts Theory, which states that the service level provided by FAs during a given longhaul flight can be reliably predicted by whether the FAs warm your nuts.

Of course, since the only food served onboard a CO flight is peanuts, it goes to show that the theory is probably only CO-specific.

If they start doing that, what else will be left to differentiate the service between business and first?

Yes, please think of the children. It's bad enough that they are 'subjected' to "porno" on the video IFE - no need to add live IFE. (unless you think you can make a few bucks... )

Actually, I think most of UA's 777s are newer than their 744s.

But yes, this is one cutback I've never understood.

The cheaper wine, no printed menus, bye bye Godiva...yes, those make a difference.

But they go through the trouble of putting the nuts in little dishes, which go on a tray--what's so hard about popping them in the oven for 5 minutes?

My only guess is they save maybe a gallon or two of fuel that the oven requires, but that's about it.

Don't they just duct engine bleed air? I know when they open the "oven" on the 757, there is a terrible shriek that sounds like hot air being blown through.

I'm by no means an aeronautical engineer, but I would think jet engines run rather cool considering their environmental operating temperatures are well below freezing.

To pipe in "hot air" from the engine and up to the upper deck galley seems like it would take far more work than supplying a 120/220 line, a heating element, and a fan (that you hear) to blow the air around inside the oven. Basically, the ovens onboard the aircraft are convection style, not conventional.
