E-upgrade strategy

I thought I'd try and use some expiring E-upgrades, rather than have them recredited, as I have always done in the past.

Currently I'm hoping to upgrade ORD-BOS vv in late Oct, cos I figured the "meal" service would be worth it. However, these flights are showing zero F award availability. So, shall I gamble that my BOS upgrade clears? I'm a 2P, and *G on bmi, if that helps.

Alternatively, shall I use them in early Oct on offpeak ORD-IAH vv flights, where there's plenty of upgrade availability? (but these are non-mealtime - so F is just a free cocktail, right?)

Thanks for your help...

sorry for side tracking here, however, I was under the assumption that if you request an upgrade with e-500's, and it doesn't clear, you get to keep them for another trip just like if you upgrade with a printed cert (HK-49, SWU, etc)...I am mistaken?

Yep ... if it doesn't clear, they stay in the account.

Well, not unless they expire... I thought they expired after 12 months and got recredited to my account as 500 miles each. Has this changed?

Anyway, 2000 miles is pretty worthless to me, so I figured I'd rather have the upgrades if poss
