Fare Class U

What does everyone know about fare class U? Is it just a standard Economy booking code? Anything special with U class?

Thanks

It is just a basic economy class booking code usually less restrictive in booking but most of the time still non refundable.

Not anything special - a fairly expensive booking class for coach.

Agreed. It has higher availability than most booking classes, and usually (at least domestically in many markets) can be booked as a one way vs some of the lower classes requiring round trips. As such, it is more expensive than what the typical "leisure/vacation" traveler buys, but is more in line with business travel that demands availability, flexibility, and has a relatively short advanced purchase requirement.

I only ended up in U once, when UA misconnected me and then chose to punish me for missing my connection by cancelling the rest of my itinerary. When I went back online to check my restored itinerary, after a 1K agent had rebooked me, I found that I was now in U (the original discounted booking class being unavailable). I just kinda assumed it was a way of restoring my itinerary without giving me the undeserved privileges for full Y.

Be careful

Be careful that UA does not book in U class for Air China flight - I arrived in Beijing yesterday and had a separate internal China flight booked in U - Air China did not recognize it - I had to go to UA desk (thank goodness it was still open) and they had to work with Air China to rebook in K class. The UA agent said this was a common problem

Aye. Different carriers use different booking codes for the same fare. A great example is AC using A for deeply discounted Y. Each fare has a table associated with it for what booking code to use on each airline that the fare can apply to, called the "legal booking class" ($LB).
