Opening a time capsule.......

I decided to clean out an overstuffed closet today. And what did I find in the midst of throwing away all the clutter? An old file folder of frequent flyer program documentation, dating back to 1989-91! Alas, I was not flying United back then, but Pan Am and US Air.

From an old and forgotten Pan Am account, I discovered to my pleasure I have a previously-unknown Delta account with 22,000 miles sitting in it!

What was as much fun, though, was a review of the awards available on Pan Am. A sampling:

USA:

1 Free economy class ticket: 20,000 miles

1 Free Clipper (business) class ticket: 40,000 miles

2 Free Clipper class tickets (for you and your companion) OR 1 Free First class ticket: 50,000 miles

2 Free First class tickets (for you and your companion): 70,000 miles

EUROPE/MIDDLE EAST/SOUTH AMERICA:

1 Free Economy class ticket: 30,000 miles

1 Free Clipper class ticket (Monday - Thursday): 50,000 miles (F-Su was 60,000)

1 Free First class ticket (anytime) or 2 Free Clipper class tickets (w/companion, M-Th): 70,000 miles

2 Free First class tickets (M-Th) or 2 Free Clipper class tickets (w/companion, anytime): 80,000 miles.

2 Free First class tickets (w/companion, anytime): 90,000 miles.

Reminding me of United's recent DOUBLE MILES offer, Pan Am did something similar just before they went belly-up, TRIPLE MILES from January 3 through April 30, 1991!

Ahh... the good old days!

Yup, they all had 3x miles for awhile - those OAK/SFO/PHX trips were great @ 750 minimums x 3. Of course, we didn't have all the other earning opportunities.

Here's a question for people who are a bit older. When I was a kid (1970s) we used to fly Pan Am and I recall flying in "FT Class" or something like that. Does that make sense?

I think it was akin to economy plus. I recall that they did not show movies in this cabin. My parents would ask the FA to take me to an open seat in the back where I could watch the movie.

It's a all bit fuzzy, I must admit.

I hope this question is acceptable. After all UA took over these routes.
