Can I use my elite benefits for others? (check-in, boarding, etc.) [Merged Threads]

Out of curiosity, if I am dropping off my in-laws at SFO can I escort them to the 1K check-in line to check them in even though I am not travelling? They have no status.

Officially? I'd be fairly sure not.

Unofficially? Presuming you're talking domestic, it's all kiosk-based. They will check your status as you enter the line at which point they won't have any idea that you're not traveling, and nobody will check status during the actual kiosk check-in, so it would probably work.

However I can't see it working to get through security...

If this is related to your thread the other week about getting them International C or F, they should have access to the line on their own

I've done this several times in LAS and SFO without any problems.

The only way a GA has to know my status is when it prints on my boarding pass since I have no other identification...yet. I've never been asked in the check in line. I just get in the premier line like I own it and away I go.

A very astute FT reader. This is related to the previous posts. However it looks like the F/C plan isn't going to go through so we booked them an award ticket in Y on SQ.

Actually now that I think about it, my original question isn't relevant anymore since we'll be checking in at SQ not UA. Oh, well, at least I know everyone's experience for future reference.

Officially I have never heard a clear policy on this one, although I imagine it would be frowned upon.
In reality it is not a problem. I have walked family members into the 1K line routinely for check in and nobody has given me a problem. If anybody asks I just show my 1K card (not that they ever ask to see the card) as it is still before check in so nobody would have boarding passes anyway. In certain cases I have also put family members in the security line. The people standing at the front to see that you should be in the line tend to let you in just by having a gold ticket jacket. I have also shown my 1K card and been let into the line. This is all at ORD so I don't know how it works anywhere else. The way I figure it even if you are caught just plead ignorance as there is no real clear rule that I know of forbidding this. Even so, I can not imagine a UA employee really thinking it is a big enough issue to alienate a 1K.

Did that with a friend at IAD only the Premier line, worked no problem at all. Even fast security for him!

A few years ago, leaving MSN when things were getting pretty bad (weather all over the midwest), a guy who was likely UGS with UA and was leaving the same meetings escorted us to the 1K/UGS check-in counter and asked that we be taken care of. It worked, by the way. ^

Just to add, I have done it for friends and family at both LHR and SFO with no problems when I have dropped them off and the attitude seems to be that so long as someone has a 1K card and *A gold then it will be honoured. I have done it for both United and Air NZ (vanilla).

I agree. It's for sure not 100% Kosher but I have done this kind of thing as a 1K (mainly on the phone to the 1K desk) and the agents are always helpful - especially if one is upfront and tell them it's not quite a legit request. Why their help? Well, I bet you any money that these traveler friends are traveling UA and not DL or AA or whoever precisely because one is a UA 1K and these friends have had a free of charge UA sales pitch done on them by the 1K that is much more effective than any advert, discount, you name it etc. I tell people basically, "this is what you are doing - unless you want to do it on your own". And sometimes they do it on their own. And they screw up most of the time. Not being a "know it all" - it's just a fact - you can't travel twice a year and know this game.

1K travelling with family, red carpet boarding or not?

I have a trip coming up where I am taking the entire family (wife and two children) to Hawaii. Booked on reward tickets.

When boarding, I am sure there is plenty of opinion on this, should we board over the red carpet?

I booked the tickets all together on one PNR, and we are seated in E+ for all the segments, I just want to hear opinion about it. Personally I feel as though I should be able to board all together, over the red carpet, but YMMV. Let me know how you would handle this.

Also, my RCC membership says I can bring my spouse and minor children in with me, can I really have 3 guests if they are my family?

I've used the Red Carpet many times with family (Mrs. dawg and two pups (6 and 3). Also did trip where had to add my mother (so 5 of us total). I've done this LAX to HNL and ONT to DEN most recently.

That said, each time we were at the gate early and I spoke to the GA just avoid trouble. In the case of LAX to HNL we were in F so it was a moot point.

As for RCC, I've taken the Mrs. and kids in just fine.

Have fuN!

Yes, I do this, especially if the option is to leave my 3P 5-year-old at the gate while I board first. Makes sense to board all at once. I've never had a problem.

I've even boarded the red carpet with non-family traveling companion (like colleague). I think it's okay as long as you don't bring along 20 companions who don't have status
