Does e500 trick work with SWU?
So if I have an itinerary for a same day turn with less than 4 hour connection and I go SFO-SYD-LAX-SFO, for upgrade purposes, does SFO-SYD-LAX count as 1 SWU?

Nope. It will take 2.

YMMV -- I recently did IND-IAD-LHR (morning flight that arrives late evening)
LHR-ORD-IND (next morning) and only one SWU was pulled from my account even though the overnight was greater than 4 hours. Probably just got lucky.^

The system should pull two, though I think it would be interesting to experiment with a LAX-SYD-SFO quick turn...

With a SWU you are given 12 hours for it to count as a connection, CR1's are 4 hours.

In theory it should, as long as you don't backtrack airports.
I did DEN-ORD-NRT-SIN-HKG-SFO-DEN with 1 SWU and 2 e-500s in Nov. The 1-SWU covered everything but the final SFO-DEN leg.
