Quick upgrade question
I am not a primary UAL flyer, but did buy a ticket just now to help support United.
I am flying PHX-LAX-SNA, and I would like to upgrade my PHX to LAX flight. Does anyone know how I can do this? Does UAL have a nominal upgrade fee available the day of departure? Is there a way to get one 500 mile E-upgrade for purchase without having to buy four? Any help is appreciated. First class is showing 12 of 12 open now.

I'm no expert, but I think you would have to buy 4 500 milers. Let me warn you though - PHX-LAX in First isn't all that special. I only upgrade short flights like that when I'm in a 'use it or lose it' position with 500 milers.

Unless you have some sort of status on United, the 500 milers are only good from full fare.

I am 1P. I do have a 1,000 mile upgrade with the MP credit card, I guess I can use that. I don't forsee using it anytime soon. Is that my best option I guess?

You're a 1P but have no 500 mile certificates in your electronic bank?
You have to buy them in books of (4).
You can certainly use your 1000 mile upgrade from the MP Visa.
You can use miles (15,000 --- a waste on such a short flight).
There are other certificates, such as time-verified upgrades and paper 500 milers, but those aren't things you're likely to come across in normal travel and not available for purchase. You might find them over at coupon connection.
