Upgrading using miles-question

Hi,

quick question:

I wanted to upgrade one of my very soon upcoming flights using miles. I was told by the lady to whom I spoke I need one pack of miles for each flight, means, each time I get off the plane,I have to chip in anohter 10.000 or something miles.
I fly IAH - SAN, changing planes (and flight numbers) in DEN, but I am there only for like 2 hours. Can I upgrade using only one time 10.000 miles?

Thanks for your answer

Yes. You should only need one 10,000 mile award to get you IAH-DEN-SAN, as they are One-Way Awards (which includes connections).

The agent was wrong and/or confused.

FWIW, I would say if you've got any StarAlliance status, get some nice E+ seats and save the miles. Each segment is only about two hours each, fairly tolerable in coach.

Of course you could always gamble and use 500 mile upgrades.

LHR Tim is right. You should save your miles for the longer flights. Besides, if your flight isn't full, smile a lot and request for E+ seats. You may get them.

E+ seats are open to everyone on the day of departure so you could request one then. As others have said, it's not worth spending 10K miles for a domestic upgrade unless it's a long transcon or 3 class aircraft. It's up to you.

While the entire seat map is open for assignment at the airport, there is still a responsibility on the part of the agents to seat only full-fare or Premiers in E+ and, if possible, leave the center seat in these rows open.
I have been gracious enough to seat very tall and/or larger people in exit rows when I know that the flight is wide open and all Premiers are seated comfortably regardless of their status or fare paid.
However, E+ is a valuable product for UA, and I always make a point of the exception being made and wish them an enjoyable flight.
