Summary of differences between OnePass and MP

Now that CO is in *A and the earning/redemption/award rules are being established, I think it will be useful to summarize the differences in one place.

Mileage earnings:

  • There are some earning differences on LH. Apparently, on CO one gets elite bonus on all LH flights, not just US-Germany like on UA. On the other hand, booking classes W, S, U outside Europe earn only 50% miles on CO, but 100% on United (at least theoretically, U class never posts as discussed in this forum). See http://www.continental.com/CMS/en-US...spx?ItemId=298 .
  • CO Golds (equiv to 1P) earn 50% elite bonus on US vs 100% elite bonus for 1Ps. At the other levels there is no difference. See http://www.continental.com/CMS/en-US...spx?ItemId=308.
  • OnePass members earn the usual elite bonuses on United. I'm nearly certain this will also work the other way around, but AFAIK hasn't been announced yet.
  • Other than CO, UA, US, LH, no elite bonuses on any other airline, both on CO and UA.
  • For the most part, earnings are closely aligned.

Redemptions, booking awards and award fees:
  • Two biggies for CO here. The first is that CO promised there would be no *net blocking. Soon we should have concrete examples of awards that CO can book but UA can't see.
  • The second is that it is already possible to book awards on many *A airlines on continental.com (but no 3-class F awards yet), and they promise to gradually add more. Note that some glitches are being reported. See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/conti...-alliance.html .
  • United eliminated the close-in booking fees for everyone. Continental has kept it, and even CO Platinums have to pay it (at a reduced level). See http://www.continental.com/web/en-US...ticketing.aspx .
  • The award tables are similar but by no means identical. For example, CO has different "Northern South America" and "Southern South America" zones. Sometimes CO is better, sometimes UA is better. The OnePass award chart is here.
  • Both UA and CO participate in the *A upgrade award with similar redemption levels. CO hasn't announced (AFAIK) the participating airlines, but they should be the same.

Let me know of any errors and omissions.
