declining a cleared upgrade.

A search revealed nothing.

Is it possible to decline an upgrade that was sponsored with a SWU.

I split a 2 person PNR into 2 separate PNRs and requested upgrades for each thinking 1+1 would have a better chance of clearing than 2. However if by deadline time only one clears can it be refused?

I've refused a cleared SWU upgrade before, just by calling UA before flighttime. If the original economy booking class is still available, you can return to Y.

The above is the before day of travel requirement
And day of travel -- just need any seat in Y to be available.

The down side of waiting will be the lack of a preferred Y seat.

Thanks very much. I'm working on something - surprise.

Would this strategy improve the chances of getting 2 upgrades requests to clear?

Ah - good to know. I guess I can only speak from pre-flight upgrade declining.

I've been told that the reservations agent will only "downgrade" you if there is space available in your original booking class. YMMV. Gate agents have more latitude with this.

The system will skip over a two person PNR with an upgrade request and move on to a one person PNR if only one seat is available. I've had more success breaking the reservation for me and SO (both 1Ks), having each clear separately. This does create more upgrade stress, however.

But if any passenger in Y is waitlisted for an UG, wouldn't you get their seat with the D/G (at least if you waited until the GA was controlling things)?

And it'd be likely whoever was at the head of the UG queue was in a "preferred" seat?

Have successfully declined an "upgrade" from the upstairs exit-row to 5E the FC seat from hell: draughty, noisy and backing onto the FA's all-night chat-room.
