Using PP to upgrade to avoid additional fees?

My friend's daughter - zero status with UA - has an upcoming 2 segment domestic trip -> outpost to hub, hub to Hawaii
right now she is in the back of the plane with regular E seats
- and planning checking a bag -> hence fees

it looks like I can use 20 PP to upgrade from outpost - hub (nothing available for hub to Hawaii, obviously)
will that get her out of paying the check bagged fees
any other benefits - beside an UG on a short (45min) segment - that might extent to the hug-HI segment?

sorry if this has been covered before.....

Only if cleared before checking bags, no refund if cleared after paying bag fee

trying to decide if worth the 20 PP vs checked bag fees
the flight doesnt look like a heavy load and since she is too young to drink - no real F benefit
