Why has united taken the 737- Max 8 and 9 off their website fleet? Has anyone else noticed this?

They haven't strictly removed the MAX--if you click through on the -800 and -900 links, MAX 8 and MAX 9 seatmaps are still there. I don't monitor the main fleet page often, so I don't know if it's a recent change to not explicitly mention the MAX on there.

There is no such thing as a 737 MAX 8 or MAX 9 - or at least, not according to Boeing.

They renamed them a few years ago to be 737-8 and 737-9 (although the line itself still seems to be named 737 MAX). Some airlines (eg, Virgin Australia) have followed this branding and removed the word MAX from their website, so they now fly both 737-800 and 737-8 (which isn't at all confusing!)

United still seem to be using the MAX naming, but as dkc192 says seems to have buried it under the equivalent 737-x00 model.

Nothing's changed.

The MAX series has always been the 737-7, 737-8, 737-9, and 737-10. As a group, they are called MAX. The -7 and -10 have not yet entered service.

The 737-300, 737-400, & 737-500 group are the Classics.

The 737-600, 737-700, 737-800, and 737-900 are the Next Generation or NG aircraft.

Boeings website disagrees. Going back a few years these models were clearly listed as being the "737 MAX 7" through "737 MAX 10" - eg, here and here from the Internet Archive copy of the site a few years ago.

Today all of those references have been renamed to the 737-7 through 737-10 (here and here for the same pages as above). I'm not saying Boeing didn't use the 737-x names from the start in at least some places, but at lease publicly they were referring to them as the "737 MAX x"

Marketing materials at some points had the MAX.

TCDS was always just 737-n.

It was a marketing switch that other posters have already noted above from years ago. The actual model has always been a 737-X.

Correct, its been that way I think since the MAX entered service with UA.

I’m curious as to how UA would list their aircraft when the MAX 10 enters service because there is no NG version of the MAX 10.

Who are they actually marketing to with their website? Surely any aircraft buyer would know what they are ordering, and the airlines for the most part seem to have continued to call it the MAX-9 etc. Seems like it was a failed rebranding effort after the first grounding.

To the point of having removed the MAX9 or MAX9

there are still there, https://www.united.com/en/us/fly/com...g-737-900.html

This is the way it has been, for many months, well before this incident.

What do you think has been removed?

I think the observation - apparently incorrect - is that the website previously listed 737-800, 737-900, and 737 Max 8 and 737 Max 9 separately at the top level, or at least as 737-900/Max 9.

Using the wayback machine suggests it has been the way it is now for some time. https://web.archive.org/web/20200227...nes-fleet.html

Best I remember, that wasn't done. I remember when updating the 739 seating thread, I was surprised to see all the 739s under one heading. And related it was part of the reason to do that for the seating thread.

.
The UA app specifies MAX nomenclature - I flew on these birds (-9) over the Christmas holidays.

I booked a flight and traveled on a MAX 8 in early November. At that time (as now), it was grouped with the NG's.
