UA 2025 sfo-ogg. Returned to sfo
About an hour out over the pacific
apparently the engine warning (fire?) system wasn’t working and needed to return back to sfo
got to sfo around 1030a - scheduled to go out after frame swap at 2p then delayed until 3 due to catering.
I usually just ignore those engine warning lights

Some food cannot be moved because it has exceeded shelf stability as fresh food. In those cases galleys have to be recatered.

I did wonder if the 1 hour out and back trip gives you BIS miles toward LF MM status
I think UA did an amazing job at service recovery:
1) $40 meal vouchers (even though I burned a 1 day pass in the lounge)
2) Free meals and drinks during the flight
3) The crew was extra friendly - even though they all had to fly back (and yes, an extra-special: "thank you for being a 1K"
4) Choice of 12500 miles or 250 ETC (hmm.... what to chose????)
yes - there was a downside to getting to OGG (for work) 6 hours late.... but all things considered......

So-called butt-in-seat (BIS) mileage for determining lifetime mileage is calculated from the origin to the destination, in this case, zero.
Building a UA city pair BIS table
No airline in recorded history has credited mileage according to the actual variable flight path each individual aircraft eventually flies. Can you imagine the cost of the computer resources necessary to do this? To what end?

But, if the purpose of MM LT status is "true" BIS miles - then, well, technically an out and back still should count????

Not when the distance between the points of embarkation and disembarkation is zero.
