Mysterious diversion: 28OCT23 UA130 HND-EWR Stopping in SFO for fuel, why?

Why is UA 130 today (Oct 28) stopping in SFO for refueling? Doesn't make sense it's a Eastbound, and previous flight IAD-HND was perfectly fine.

Why is it stopping for fuel in SFO
  • pilots want to get gas at Costco and save 5 cents per gallon
  • stopping at SFO to grab a pizza
  • they need gas
  • Flight Attendant needs to meet their spouse
  • its better to land at SFO than OAK

There’s also a great INO Burger near the airport?

The HND-EWR flight is supposed to depart Haneda around 4-6pm, that got delayed until 10pm(plane wasn't serviced on time).

Due to that delay, crew probably isn't legal to get to EWR, so have to stop at sfo

@paperwastage what does serviced meaning? also, since doesn't the work time start when the boarding door shuts? Since it's not a tarmac delay, why would the crew time out? Thanks!

The crew didn’t acknowledge a soft start and were not able to reset. Recrew needed in SFO.

Cleaning of plane, restocking the blankets/pillow etc.

The SFO stop is only 45 min, so no customs/deplaning... Just swapping crew. Crew has their own time restrictions, FAA and UA rules https://www.airliners.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=764995

ultimately in route diversions are
1) Medical
2) Mechnical
3) Crew Timeout (due to delayed start)
4) least common, weather creating a need for refueling
5) destination airport weather

Starting multiple hours late internationally is a red flag for crew timeout
L04.33 -- late departing HND 4 hours 33 minutes screams crew timeout

Looks like IAD-HND (UA 803) arrived about 5 hours late at 8pm, so cascading delay

The crew didn't acknowledge the departure delay before their original duty time was meant to start, so they went on duty as scheduled and then timed out due to the delay. If they had acknowledged, they could have started duty later and not timed out.

There are two limitations for a crew: 1) flight time, which starts when the parking brake is released and 2) duty day, which begins when they sign in for the flight. You wouldn't want a crew that's been waiting at the airport for 12 hours to fly you on a long flight.

This does not exist under FAR117. The crews duty day starts at the scheduled report time. The only way to reset that time is to notify them at least 10 hours prior to the new report time. Generally that will not happen with airport delays since they are well within that 10 hour window. United’s options at that point are shorten the flight to fit the available duty time or send the crew back to the hotel for 10 hours free of duty to reset their clock.
