Upgraded to F LAS-EWR, didn’t really want it
I guess I had a good problem: I got upgraded to F on a flight from Vegas to Newark. However, I would prefer to have the whole E+ row to myself so I could lay down and sleep. So I ended up staying in F for dinner, then moving to an empty row in economy

If you did not want it, why didn't you decline the upgrade so someone else could take it?

Side note, I think you played this mostly right. Granted, midweek-redeye (assuming light load)... but there would be no way to guarantee that your row would have stayed empty because even after boarding (FA's doing buy-ups). I *might* have told the GA to give up the F seat to next on the list with the caveat of "please keep the row empty".

The debate to take a full F cabin or try to snag and E+ row (a gamble). I've thought about it. Just depends on how much you value unlimited drinks and whatever variable food item United may serve you.
The gamble is that you never know where those standby passengers are going to go. If they have status, they often end up in E+ if it is not full.

I find the F seats at least a bit softer than the Y slimlines. With the various lounges at LAS offering real food, I think skipping the wnderful UA cuisine would have been easy to do.
Several empty rows on MUC-DEN this past Monday which led to pax stretching across all three seats.

I went through this exact drill not many years ago on the redeye LAX-CLE. Mentioned to the GA that I'd gladly exchange my F upgrade for a row in Y if possible. She said (paraphrasing) "Sure, I'll block the row for you". It wasn't a full flight, obviously.
