verification question
when you call united do they typically ask for your security questions when doing stuff like applying plus points etc

Yes, anytime I have called in to redeem Plus Points or use miles to upgrade, etc. I am always asked my verification question(s) (similar to how they previously used to ask for the PIN code).

Yes, they can't redeem any miles or PlusPoints from your account without first verifying it with the security questions. They also can't make new bookings with your saved profile/travelers/payment information without verifying the account either.
