Passenger Wing Walker after landing -- UA 2478 at ORD

A man on arriving United flight 2478 at ORD this morning opened an overwing exit and walked across the wing to the tarmac. I would assume the slide deployed but it doesn't say. Edit: perhaps there aren't any slides on the 737 overwing exits. Lucky for United.

The 737 over-wing exits do not have slides.

Police told WGN a man onboard the plane pulled the emergency exit door and walked out onto the wing of the plane, then slid down onto the airfield
That's quite a large drop, isn't it?

35 feet to ground? Or 40?

I don't think it's more that 6 or 7 feet to the ground from the wing...

I just looked it up- it's only 12 ft from the wingtip, so your estimate is likely close.

I am going to blame the Cinco de Mayo drink special at the UC just now for my horrible initial estimation.

Roughly six feet with the flaps retracted. In an evacuation we'd fully-extend the flaps to aid in the evacuation.

Plus, I thought that on some planes (with window exits), you have to pull something to inflate the slides

Yet another reason I read the safety card even if not sitting in an exit row.

I don't know of any that do not deploy automatically but I haven't flown every aircraft type. They do (I suspect all of them) have a manual method of deploying the slide if the automatic system fails.

That would make sense, the safety card might have said something like "if fail's to inflate, pull handle" I just distinctly remember a picture of a handle.
