Did anyone ever hear what was wrong with it to begin with?

heard on ATC they turned back to SFO because of high oil temperature in the right engine. Declared emergency and landing with ARFF nearby.

No, plan is to fly to HKG for maintenance and there's no way any prudent crew would embark on a TPAC crossing with an engine anomaly like that, pax or not.

There have been issues with oil leaks and other engine squawks with the aircraft coming out of long-term storage, so not terribly surprising.
cesco.g and SPN Lifer like this.

ah, youre right, they said by 2025, so I was off by 2 years. Needless to say, having completed 0 refurbishments since the announcement makes me skeptical of completing all the narrow body updates in the next 2.5 years.

“We’re also upgrading 100% of our existing mainline, narrow-body aircraft by 2025, so you can enjoy a modernized experience across our domestic network.”

I would assume that slipped to at least 2026 given the year delay. Essentially a 3 year plan whenever they do start the retrofits.

Running the numbers, if all of the 558 NB aircraft (assuming 752s would not get upgrade and 16 delivered 38M) will get the upgrade and if the mod time is an estimated 14 days, it would take 7+ mod lines continuously for 3 years.
7 lines times 26 two-week periods = 182 per year. Three years would allow 546 units (12 short), but that leaves no slack or holiday periods.
If 3 to 4 weeks in mod are needed, take it up to 15 continuous mod lines.

Am I reading the United fleet website correctly and all 772s are updated?

I am looking at UA 2618 and 2247 b/w SFO-IAD and it's showing the 2-4-2 seating chart.
