Getting around BE change restrictions?

So now that COVID is subsiding, United has made BE tickets non-changeable. However, looking at the site today, I noticed they are claiming that BE ticket can be "upgraded" to full Economy level to enjoy complimentary seat assignment, be eligible for upgrades, etc.

So my question is - let's say I book BE and then something happens that I can't travel. To avoid losing that ticket, can I upgrade it to full Economy, and then change it? Has anyone done that?
